The Ins and Outs of using NaviComputer

Quick Guide to NaviComputer V0.8R2 Operation:

Follow these simple steps to get a quick overview about NaviComputer functions and handling.

  1. Open NaviComputer on your device.
  2. When the main screen displays, notice that in the upper right corner is a red OFF.  This signifies that the GPS is not tracking.  This will be set in the Menu
  3. In the top bar, there are displays for Altitude Speed, and on the far right, the satellites that are being used for tracking
  4. The lower tray contains seven icons/buttons:
    1. -/+ Keys used for zooming maps
    2. Map button top row left: returns user to main map screen
    3. Track button top row center:  starts/stops NaviComputer track function
    4. GPX button top row right: displays stored tracks
    5. Full screen soft key on left lower row:  toggles screen from standard display to full screen for maximum area.
    6. Menu soft key on right lower row:  Displays GPS Active, Options sub menu, Help file, About NaviComputer and Exit (this shuts down application) (Note:  The X, which appears in the upper tray on some devices, might only minimize the application.)
      1. Under Options:
        1. Maps, and Logging file paths.
        2. Setting of Units: US system or Metric system.
        3. Keep device always on: Prevent automatic device standby.
  5. Enter the Menu and select GPS Active.  This causes the GPS to seek a satellite fix.  Once this is done, the “flag” in the right upper corner of the screen goes yellow while searching, and changes to green when the GPS has a lock.
  6. Tap and hold on the center of the main screen to display the CONTEXT MENU.  The options on the menu are: Center GPS Position, 2xZoom, Map, Online Mode and Download Map.
  7. Click on Center GPS Position.  Once the GPS has a lock, NaviComputer will know where you are and place your location at the center of the map screen.  This makes it very easy for Navi to load the map set and display all relevant zoom levels.
    1. 2xZoom will magnify the view again
    2. Map:  Use this function to select different maps for a different view or from another source (if stored).
    3. Online Mode:  Maps will be “live” and all zooms will be available by using -/+ keys
    4. Download Map:  NaviComputer will download and store maps in the same manner as NaviMapper
  8. Once NaviComputer has a lock and the “flag” is green, you are ready to start a track.
  9. Click on the Track button on the top row center, and tap “Start New Track”, NaviComputer will start to record your track once you move provided the present track point and the preceding track point are at least 3 meters apart.  This prevents the size of the track file from increasing when you are not moving.  The track will be indicated on the map screen by a red line.
    1. The speed displayed in the top bar is the true speed
    2. The speed displayed on the Track Screen labeled Speed preceded by a zero/slashed is the average speed.
    3. To stop the track, enter the Track Screen again and tap the red Stop Track button.
  10. When you stop the track, the screen will change to the Save Track file screen where you will name the track, select the interval between track points to be kept in the file, and store it, to be recalled when desired.  You can also choose Do not Save (or OK), which will return you to the Track Screen.

That’s all there is!  Nothing to it!

I am not sure what you mean when you say "Please, could you tell me what I can do that NaviComputer work".
    That's like telling a doctor " I don't feel good".
It would help if you explain a bit more. Error Messages, the steps you took which created the issue and so on.

    Goran,

where did you find .NET Compact Framework 4.0? As far as I know that doesn't even exist! Try uninstalling it and install .NET CF version 3.5 (The one linked on the download page http://navicomputer.com/download.php )

I installed the software and it looks great, i managed to get a fix with GPS, tried to connect to update map then software was very slow and my machine crashed, i am using HTC hd..

Any one had this problem , i could not update the map.

    I appreciate the help

  11. Tippy says:

    OSYOSY

The speed of download is mainly controlled by your service provided, but keep in mind that anytime you download maps, it will not be speedy fast.
I do my maps on a pc and transfer them to the device. Unless you have unlimited data plan, I would NOT recommend using the online map udate.

I have downloaded to my SmartPhone the NaviComputer 0.91 programme, and using NaviMapper I also downloaded some selected maps to the computer into a folder: MAPS. These files have the extension of *.nmap.

Now: I cannot find any references as to how to get these maps onto the phone and where to copy them; ie. into which directory.

I am very reluctant to experiment without the exact instructions.

    Many thanks for any advice,

    David Sade

  14. Tippy says:

    DAVID SADE,

Not a problem. The *nmap (for NaviMapper….cute huh!) are always created in the Map folder within the NaviMapper directory.
I like to copy the map set that you was created in NaviMapper, and paste it into the MAP folder within NaviComputer's directory.

This is the greatest feature of NaviComputer. You can download as many map sets as you like, store them on your pc, and when needed, move or copy them to your device! Sames time and storage space. Take only those map sets you need on the device when you travel, and lease the rest home. :)

    Regards,
    tippy

  15. Tippy says:

    DAVID SADE,

I read over your post again, and want to make sure you know how to transfer the files.

You will need the current application, Active Sync 4.5, or if you have Vista, Mobile Device Center….installed on your pc.

Without getting into lengthy instructions, once installed, AS or MDC will sync the pc to your device through a USB cable, and the rest is simply drag and drop type of operation.

    tippy

I've have the same problem. I've looked in quick start (maybe I'm looking in the wrong place) and do not see how to get the file menu to select the maps.

Can you explain how we get to the file menu?

  17. Tippy says:

    RAGHU,

The nmap files are copied to MAPS in the root, not Mobile. However, they can be stored anywhere on the device as long as you set the destination folder in Options Menu.

As for setting the mapsource, press and hold anywhere on the screen and the Context Menu will appear.

Please read the articles here on how to use NaviComputer, and NaviMapper.

After previewing over 12 freeware GPS programs, NaviComputer .92 dominated my at home testing. I will test it on the road tomorrow. To the developers, I can't say enough about how you surpassed others' efforts in design and performance so far.
Like Confused and Raghu I cannot see (file open) in the Context Menu, though. My HTC Kaiser shows a 6 item menu [Center GPS, 2x Zoom, Maptype, Add POI, Online & Download]
This is a very minor concern to me based on the excellent performance I am witnessing so far. I expect I will be doubly pleased by my road testing results tomorrow.

  19. tippy says:

    ABJULLAH,

The developer of NaviComputer works very hard to get "things right the first time". You and many have seen the results. Yes, there may be some issue that needs to be resolved, but the developer does so as soon as it is practical. New releases are timely and frequent, adding new features and options with each one.

As for Context Menu, you should see the map source you downloaded if you click on MapType. If not, you did not, Navi either does not know where you stored the maps, or they were stored incorrectly.

If you would please read the articles here on NaviComputer and NaviMapper, I am sure you will get it to work as it should.

No problem, Tippy. Thank you for the invite. I understand now that the menu doesn't browse folders, but compatable map types in the set default location instead.
The program has worked flawlessly for me. I road tested it today and loved the performance. NaviComputer is an excellent solution for my needs.

  22. Tippy says:

    ABDULLAH,

Yes, it will show the map set or sets that you have downloaded and stored on the device. You select which set you wish Navi to use. The default location is MAPS under the root of NaviComputer, but you can store the maps anywhere. I keep mine on the storage card to keep device memory clear.

Glad you like the app. I am sure the developer appreciates your comments.

Hello! Thank you for the program.
I still can't choose map, that I have downloaded. I placed it in the right folder ( were SampleOpenStreetMap is) and press on the screen. Choose Maptype – and I see only OpenStreetMap for selection with checked checkbox.
Size of my created map is 85 mb. May be this is a problem?

  24. tippy says:

    TATSIANA,

Until Navicomputer identifies your position, it will not show any other map choices. A map size of 85mb does sound a bit on the low side, but it depends on what zoom level/s you downloaded.

I suggest you go back into the Tips and Tricks and read up on how to use NaviComputer, especially where it deals with centering the map.

Thank you very much for respond! I fixed the position and Navi did all the rest. Working perfectly now.

  26. rmoe says:

Since today openstreetmap download is locked. OSM people say it is because navimapper produces too much download at a time. Question to developer: Can that be avoided some way, and can you work with OSM to solve that issue. Thank for this great tool.

  27. D says:

Where does someone post technical issues? I have a Palm Pro with WinMo 6.1 and the app can't be minimized. There is no OK button as with normal apps. Thanks!

  28. tippy says:

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581474

However, I assume you want to keep Navi running in the background?
It will if you activate GPS, and then set it to "Keep Device Always On" in the options.

When Navi is recording a track, and you close it with the X, it continues to record until you reopen it and stop the track.

If you are not recording a track, and you have the GPS activated, Navi runs in the background .

    Does this help at all?

  29. D says:

More specifically, when you click the Today option, you would normally see the main screen with appointments, tasks, etc. When you select Today while in NaviMapper, You see the title bar for Windows but the map screen is still active. You can't see the background – Navimapper never actually minimizes…

  30. tippy says:

    D,
Use the X to close the app. If you are recording track, Navi continues to track.

Navi does run in the background. Does the Pro have a setting for "Keep Today in foreground"? Some do.

I will ask the developer to see if "minimize" might be a feasible option.

    tippy

  31. rajesh says:

thanks to the developer and tippy
wanted to know if i can store maps of two different zooms for use

  32. Tippy says:

    RAJESH,

Certainly you can. As long as the different zooms (tiles) are kept in the same place (directory), NaviComputer will identify them, and use them accordingly.

I might have answered this same question in here before, but no matter. Glad to help.
