Quick tutorial for using NaviMapper V0.8 R2 to download map sets for NaviComputer
Once you have downloaded and installed NaviMapper, follow these simple steps to create your map set.
- Open NaviMapper (NaviMapper is the application on your PC, not on the device.)
- The open search box is used to locate a geographic point by name. Ex: If you enter Argentina and press GoTo, Navi will center the world map over Argentina. This speeds up map area selection at the higher zoom levels, and makes geographic navigation much easier.
- From the drop down box at the top, select the source from which the maps will be downloaded.
- Using both the slider and the right mouse to bring into the center of the screen the approximate area for want to create a map set.
- Outline the area by holding the left mouse and dragging out to cover the area. A blue box will form around the area selected. Note: If you make a mistake and want to redraw the blue outline, click again within the area that has been selected, and the box disappears.
- In the Zoom level window, you will see the zooms based upon the slider position. The zooms have been limited for each slider position to prevent a user from downloading the entire world at zoom level 17! This would not only be impractical, but would prompt many complaints from users waiting for the download to complete. Below the zoom window is the estimated size of the map containing all the selected tiles. The real size may differ because it depends on the chosen mapsource and the map area. In most cases the file size will be considerably less than shown in the Estimated File Size box.
- Select the levels by clicking in the box next to a level, and then click the Download button.
- A “Download Map” screen will open. Fill in the filename for your map set (It can be any name you choose), and enter the folder location where you wish the map set to be stored. (I recommend the Map folder within the NaviComputer root if possible, or create a folder on a storage card to preserve device internal memory) The to the right of “Save to Folder” will allow you to browse your device for this location.
- When you are satisfied with the map set created, and its destination folder, click on Start. Use Cancel to stop the download at any time. Note: Once you cancel a download, it cannot be resumed. The app will allow you to save whatever you have downloaded. However, to insure that you have not corrupted a zoom level, you should continue the download from the next to last zoom shown when the download was cancelled.
- The status of the download will show via a green flow bar under Status in the top data block. The total tiles to be downloaded and the total tiles that have been downloaded will appear in the lower data block.
- When the download is complete, you will see the nmap file located in the folder to which it was directed in the Options Menu.
That’s it! Download as many map sets, as you like. You can even store them on your PC and transfer whatever map set you need, on and off the device as easily. Have them, load them, and go!

Hi. How could I speed up the download. i notice it has the same time downloading at different dsl speeds.
JANUEL,
Compared to the performance of cable Internet service, DSL speed has historically been slower.
The speed at which you download is determined by the service provider and varies greatly at times. Download time depends on the service provider line in terms of bandwidth capacity and availability.
Bandwidth represents the capacity of the connection itself. The greater the capacity, the more likely that greater performance will follow, though overall performance also depends on other factors, even down to how long the phone line is from terminal box to pc.
The application itself must be able to receive and then "use" the information at a rate that does not cause it to become unstable.
The rate at which Navi receives and processes data is typical. Please note that the higher zoom levels take much longer to download since they contain many more tiles than those at say zoom 3 or 4. Since Navi is one of the applications that allows you to use maps offline, you must be patient in downloading them. It does take time. The larger the area you want, the more time it takes.

Is there a way to tell NaviMapper to download all zoom levels? I am trying to download an entire state map, but it seems to only download down to level 11, but if I zoom I can get down to lvl 17.
INFAMOUS,
The developer has put in a safeguard in NaviMapper so that a user cannot download the world map to zoom 17!
You can download all zooms, by simply breaking the nmap download into two or more files as you wish.
NaviComputer will find all the needed maps regardless of how many folders you use.
Let's say I want California in all zooms. If I zoom down to 10, I will loose 1 to 9, so I would simply download 10 to 17, and then go back and download 1 to 9.
Works for me!

Tippy
Hi,
Looks great. I am trying it out. Can I change the source in the drop down box to something different then what it is listing now?
PIPIN,
Explore the Blog section and read Quickstart….Using NaviMapper.
IT will answer your question.

Hi,
Very nice tool and thanks for it! As some of the other wrote above, I need to download large areas at high zoom level (16-17) and right now I am doing it on portions of maps. And there are 2 problems: either portion of maps are missing between 2 or more downloaded maps, either I have overlapped maps (tiles downloaded at least twice, once in every map).
As the download is going I counted at most 10 000 tiles per hour of download. Since I have downloads of up to 200k tiles that means more than 20 hours for one download.
Suggestions: it would be nice to have a more precise tool to split the download in more maps, save a project and reload it, pause and resume a download
Hi just tried your product, filled in Amsterdam clicked on Goto (OpenstreetMap) but no result, what am I doing wrong
MANFRED,
You've probably done nothing wrong. The world map will center on Amerstam, but you may not notice it shift center.
Use the slider to magnify the screen and Amsterdam should show up in the center.
I tried it on my NaviMapper and it worked fine.
Next time you post, please let us know whether the issue is on NaviMapper or NaviComputer.

Hi Tippy, thnx for the reply.
Since I posted this comment in the blogpost "Downloading Maps with NaviMapper" I thought it was clear the problem is in the NaviMapper
But I found the problem (I think)
I installed it on a computer that is using a proxy. I do not see any map
Now I installed it on a computer without a proxy, and now it works
MANFRED,
No problem. Yes, I saw you put "Goto" which indicates NaviMapper. I was simply adding the comment to always let us know which app has the issue.
When you stated "No Result", I believed that you did not see Amsterdam in the center, not that you saw no map at all.
If you had mentioned the proxy, I would have been able to solve the issue right away since Navi at present will not work through a proxy as you have found out.
However, it is good to know that you now have Navi working. Enjoy
Best wishes,
tippy
Just a general question, since I am new to this product, I might have some additional questions (for both NaiMapper and NaviComputer), is there a forum, or are these blogposts the place to ask?
MANFRED,
Yes, there is a forum for the application. The link to it was on the Blog page at the right side, but I will give it to you now.
When you have time, explore all of the NaviComputer website pages. There is a wealth of information on them.

Hi I have only used navimapper once and I now get message:
'access blocked we suspect this client is downloading maps in an unauthorised manner. Please ask at IRC.openstreetmap.org'
The same happened to me. I have only used navimapper 2 times and I got the same message.
This happened when I used navicomputer, the display said the same message.
I checked at IRC.openstreetmap.org
They pointed me to have a look at:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tile_Abuse
It seems that navicomputer became to popular so it was blocked to protect the usage of the tiles. The maker of navimapper ans navicomputer should contact openstreetmap for a solution. Until then the gps is useless with online connection.
To All,
I have sent the Developer a message to advise on the situation.
Try to be patient. This is completely unexpected from Open Street Maps.

where can I download the NaviMapper software??
GEERT
You should download the NaviComputer v.92 file
http://navicomputer.com/download.php
This will install Navimapper on your computer, and if have your device connected to the PC via Active Sync or similar, Navicomputer will be installed onto the phone, as part of the installation process.

When you switch the tiles to "OpenStreemOSM" you cann still use it, but with a different map.
Better than nothing right now.
Thanks Christian for your hint, OSM Maps working, different but not bad!
Hi,
NaviComputer works fine! But an additional question: for trekking it would be great to have the maps available from "OSMC" (Wander- und Reiterkarten) which show the markings/ waysigns an tours. It would be necessary to have the choice for OSMC- Maps in NAVIMAPPER, I guess. I read something about an update on "topo.openstreetmap…" but cannot find any more the whole adress. Who can help?
Is there any way in NaviMapper to identify the scale of the selected OSM map at the different zoom levels?
The reason I ask is that, for walking, I will need 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 scale views. I also want to download the largest area I can (within reason).
Y have dowload yesterday NaviComputer for my HTC HD2 and works great. Y have one question. Y canot download at the openstreetmap with te cycle routes. Is there a solution for.
Thanks
Jan,
At the request of OSM, we had to remove coding for the cycle maps.
You can however modify the XML file if you wish to include any free map source you wish.
Best Wishes,
tippy
Bob,
Right now, we have added the scale in US or Metric measurement on the map screen, lower left, as users requested.
What you mention is the 'scale ratio' which has not been added to Navi at this time. Users felt that the "scale" in miles or kilometers was more often used.
Best wishes,
tippy
Hi tippy
Have you some examples for me I am new in this matter.
Best regards
Jan
Well, I am not sure of what you mean by "examples". Of what?
If you go to the Tips and Tricks section of the website, you will find all you need to know about using NaviComputer and NaviMapper.
In addition, you can visit the XDA Developers website which is a forum on computer devices where we have a section for NaviComputer
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?s=168acdd6927e39bc98f4ffd6f5a5f632&t=581474
This link takes you to the First page of about 102 pages that have been accumulated since the introduction of the app.
Between the Blog and Forum, just about any question you have will be answered.
XDA is a very simple, no obligation of any kind, sign-up so you can have an acccess ID and password. XDA is a massive site for all your computer questions.

Hi, where can I get topo map for NaviMapper?
I have a Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 and I installed the software and the map. But the GPS indication is only displaying as searching. It is not giving me the GPS location. Compass also is not indicating anything. Let me know if yopu have any suggestions
BOND:
I experienced the same thing. It doesnt work! The screenshots doesnt even corresponds to what i see on my device. The menus are entirely diffrent. Those who installed the software on xperia x2 please share what you have done. I think this app is better than other gps apps.
More power.
It app works great! I have a question though, when downloading maps into 2 files (because of different zoom levels) do you save both files in the map folder of navicomputer? What file names should I use? What if some map tiles with the same zoom level are save on both files, will it cause problems?
Hoju,
As long as the "map sets" are in the same place within Navi, preferably in Maps, the app will identify them and use them as needed. I simply name them by the location and the folder nuumber: such as [location]1, [location2] etc. where "location" is the area covered by the zoom levels.
Since Navi uses GPS location to identify your fix, it will know which maps to use even if they have the same zoom levels.
Good luck.
Oops…
I meant [location1], [location2] etc, ……not "[location]1"
hahaha
Since version 0.94 the navimapper allows only to download 8 levels with zoom levels according to the size of the area. Why? Why isn't it posible choose as many levels I like (I have space for)? Why this limitation?
It prevents the map server from being tied up. If there were no limitations on zoom levels, a user could download tiles for the entire world at one time locking up the server to other users.
We have been asked not to allow this by map source vendors.
Nothing prevents you from downloading other zooms levels for an area at another time, and saving them in the same place as the first set within Navi. Navi will find them and use them as needed. It is a pretty smart app!
Best Wishes,
Tippy
Can anyone help me?
Navimapper doesn't show any maps for me, it's just a white screen =/ I've tried to change sources and centre on different places but I still can't select any part of the map because there's no map shown, at all.
BABET,
Please make sure you follow the instructions in " Downloading Maps with NaviMapper" in teh FAQ section, then read the section on "The Ins and Outs of NaviComputer".
Does Navicomputer show the world map at startup?
If it does, then check the NaviComputer directory on your device in the MAPS folder to insure that the maps have been placed there.
If you do not see them, then go into the Menu/Options and make sure that the folder where you stored the maps is the same as the one indicated under the setting "Maps Directory".
If it is not, then change it to where the maps are stored by tapping on the data line. This now reveals a directory tree. Locate the maps and then tap on it to set that folder to the "Maps Directory". Then tap OK at the bottom.
Try it again and post if you have any further difficulty.

Tippy
Will naviMapper work with Bing maps? Does microsoft even allow downloading them?
Hi,
I downloaded some .nmap files in the proper directory on my HTC Youch Pro with WM 6.5 but NaviComputer does not access them. Even if I associate them with NaviComputer the program is blind to the files. Any reason why this can be? I read other users had a similar problem on another comment? Hope you can help out, that would be wonderful.
Best regards, Dagmar
