Additional map sources

As stated in our FAQ section, it is possible to add additional map sources by modifying the MapSources.xml file.

In this post I would like to list up online map sources which do work with NaviComputer/NaviMapper. Please share your additional map sources here if you found any.

There are probably many maps of specific regions/countries available somewhere in the internet.

There is only one condition: Please always confirm that the copyright holder of the map allows to use, download and store the map free of charge. Discussions about map sources which do not allow users to store their maps (like Google) will be deleted.

Let me start with some maps of European countries I found:

Inserting the xml lines prevents Navimapper to start. Even tried to use a special XML editor (MS XML Notepad2007). Nothing changes. What am i doing wrong? Could you be so kind to send me/ publish a working mapsources.xml file with maps from above?

I tried this, but only forests and Settlements are shown. No Roads, Trails, Names......Nothing much pure white. Anything missing?

  15. Max Says:

First of all: awesome tool! Thank you so much!

I was wonderng if there is any possibility to use own scanned maps or topographical maps from programs like the German Top50?

    Cheers and Thanks again!

  16. Max Says:

    another question:

how to figure out the map address of a mapservice i found somewhere in the net? any hints?

    for instance: http://openseamap.org/

  17. Developer Says:

    Hi Max,

scanned maps can not be used at this time.
For getting the server url where the tiles are located I am using the firefox addon "HttpFox". Simply load the map in the browser and you will see where it loads the tiles from in HttpFox.

  18. Paul Says:

Is there a way to switch to a "no map" mode to be able to zoom in even without having a map?

If I load a gpx file and I have no map of the area of the loaded track and also no internet connection right now I cant even see the track as a dot because the max zoom level is 3 which is wayyy to far zoomed out.

What would be nice is a way to not have a map at all, just white background but still be able to zoom in.

That would anable me to still navigate along the loaded gpx track even though I have no image of any map in the background.

Right now I can not zoom in unless I am in online mode or have a map for the area.

  19. Tippy Says:

    PAUL,

Unfortunately that is the way Navi works. It "zooms" not because of the application itself which simply processes the tiles, but of the zoom levels that are part of the .nmap file it uses.
I know that some GPS apps do use a "grid" background, but Navi was not designed for "grid" use, but for "map" use which seemed more practical, and deemed more desirable by users.
Maybe we can put it on the "wish list". :)

    Best wishes,
    tippy

  21. Max Says:

    Dear Developer,

Thank you for the response! I will try the firefox addon.

Hint: I recognized a problem with the mapsource xml file. My mapper is not working as long as I use letters like the "Ö" for instance " in . In your example (above) you are using the "Ö". So...maybe other people will have the same problem, if they try the mentioned source.

Wish: Now, I have downloaded a couple of maps from different sources. When I am using the Navicomputer and try to zoom, the program sometimes switches the maps unintendedly. This happens, when I have maps from same areas with same zoom levels. For me it would be very helpful if there is a function in the map menu to activate and deactivate the different maps, like it is in the POI menu. Than the user could choose the maps he would like to view. But...this is just an idea.

Keep the good work going and thanks a lot!

  22. Josh Says:

Well Virtual Earth was listed once on the "how do" for the MapSources.xml... I know it's been a while since I got my minor in computer science but I can't see how you use the k parameter. Perhaps if anybody sorts out other maps they can share across the net in suitable places since at this present time not much info on the solution.

I'm taking my smartphone with Navicomputer to the Dead Sea which is below sea level so will be an interesting test on the program. On the GPX height screen after I had digitised some points in it was fine at showing height, but I haven't seen much height recently.

Other than that it works fine and promises to be useful when you are off the beaten track where mapping systems don't reach or aren't in your native language, so very good for holiday planning and hopefully good when there, like recording the track in the taxi from hotel to airport so to pick the hire car up so you can drive it yourself in the hire car the next time ;) .

  23. Developer Says:

    Hi Josh,

the k parameter is used in the same manner like the x, y and z parameters. Simply replace the quadkey in the tileaddress with the placeholder %k

A test below sealevel is interesting, I have not tested it yet but I think it shouldn't cause any problems.

  24. Josh Says:

Thanks for that Developer, I'll let you know whether it generates -1,000ft below see level, but I'm relying on it to deliver one too assorted points in the desert and terrain for wadi walks etc in Jordan. Interesting Google maps have the north of the country sorted whilst the south isn't, whilst OpenStreetMap have the south sorted but not the north. I may map out tracks whilst there in the north and submit to OpenStreetMap.

  27. Anders Says:

    Hi!
Anyone no any good map-source for offroad use?
Google, OpenMap and others are not so good for this. They do not show trials, all offroad is mostly a green mass.

    /Anders

  28. Anders Says:

I should have said that I am looking for maps covering Sweden and Norway.

  29. Max Says:

    Dear Anders,

Are you Swedish? What about the major online map services hitta.se and eniro.se. Are they restricted? Are you able to read their terms of use? I would love to download some areal photos from these websites...

    Cheers,
    Max

  30. Anders Says:

    They unfortunately are restricted...
But, try a little should not harm?! ;-)
I have not yet found out how to get the link to the tiles, tried httpfox but did not understand what to use.
Also, they are not so detailed offroads either.

outdooractive.com looked promissing but sadly they do not cover Sweden.

  31. birdfluchia Says:

Hey, is it possible to use this as a GPS device? (:

  32. Harry Says:

Yahoo maps terms and conditions suggest that downloading their maps for personal use on a handheld device is allowed. Has anyone had any success using the yahoo map source, or have I misunderstood the terms and conditions?

  33. Developer Says:

    Harry,
please provide a link to the reference where you found this.

    birdfluchia,
    What do you mean??

  34. MM Says:

    To Anders and Max.
Hi. If you find any solution to use eniro.se or hitta.se please let us know.
Would be great to have some good swedish maps.... eniro also have seecharts....

  35. anand akmanchi Says:

I installed 0.92 on my Omnia II GTi8000 and used navimapper to download some osm data. i copied that to maps directory on phone but unable to see the map. The real problem is that i am unable to get any "map, POI, download map" context menu options at all!
I tap on the world map icon but nothing happens. Does anyone know whats wrong here?

  36. Abdullah Says:

    Dear Developer,

The US Yahoo Maps TOU is at
    http://info.yahoo.com/legal/us/yahoo/maps/mapstou/mapstou-278.html

"Personal Use Only...you may copy this Data only as necessary for your personal use to (i) view it on your screen, (ii) print it, (iii) transfer a copy to a personal electronic device such as a personal digital assistant; (iv) save it, and..."

followed by Restrictions, which "without limiting the preceding" disallow use for "real time route guidance" and use "with functionality of any devices or systems which include resident geographic data and/or which enable a continuous or intermittent (i.e., more frequently than once per minute) position determination"

I could be wrong, but imoh they are more concerned here about being exploited for their bandwidth as a "real time" data source than they are over arbitrary copyright restrictions on offline navigation.

  37. Abdullah Says:

    Anand,
Carefully reviewing FAQ 13 should help with that. The issues include centering the default world map on the area your downloaded map includes (first use) and zoom ratios.
Your touch screen may use the tap and hold gesture to display a context menu (user maunual shoudld verify). Note that the menu shows unavailable actions as disabled. Hope this helps you.

  38. TAF Says:

Suddenly, I get a message from OpenStreetMap.org in NaviMapper and NaviComputer on my phone, that they blocked access because they suspect unauthorized use! I cannot download the maps anymore. Does anyone know what's going on?

  39. Developer Says:

    Hi all,

yes, currently there is a problem with the OpenStreetMap map download. I'm in contact with the openstreetmap server admin.
I will publish a fixed version very soon.
    Sorry for the inconvenience.

  40. Lukas Says:

So, how do I change the following URL to be correct? I always get an semicolon expected error on position 58 no mater how much i change around
    http://map.search.ch/chmap.de.jpg?x=-126008m&y=-41024m&w=480&h=256&layer=bg&zd=1&n=0

  41. Lukas Says:

Well, now (after havin actually read the FAQ) I'm actually halfway there I think. changed it to http://map.search.ch/chmap.de.jpg?w=600&h=600&layer=bg,fg,copy&zd=512&x=-%xm&y=-%ym worked quite well, but variable zd is the zoom level so I'm not able to actually zoom in, when I zoom in the map goes north ...

  42. olaf Says:

    – Problem solved, Error GPX File not supported, now also in FAQ. Converted the Files with: routeconverter.de
In GPX Format 1.1 or 1.0 works both.
The new Version 0.93 works fine.
Please bring back Open Cycle Map in Navi Mapper for Hiking the Maps are the best.
One Thought for the next Version, a total of Altitude from a Tour and min. and max. Speed would be great.
    – Thank you

  43. Horst Says:

    Hello everybody,

first let me give a big "Thank You" to the developers of this really nice App. I have it running on WM5, even thoug this doesn't seem to be officially supported.

@Max: The tile URL for Open Sea Map is this:

    http://tiles.openseamap.org/seamark/14/8742/5246.png

Unfortunately, it serves only the seamark overlay for the underlying Open Street Map. While this opens up flexibility as to what base layer to use, it is not really useful with NaviComputer right now. That's because NaviComputer seems to offer no way to display a partially transparent layer on top of another map. I see two theoretical solutions to this:
    - The developers add layering support to NaviComputer
    - We figure a tile source that delivers the complete map with seamark overlays integrated
I sure would like to see any one of these solutions realized – but given the choice the first would of course be nicer.

    @olaf
Open Cycle Map seems a bit experimental for now, but currently this tile URL should work:

    http://b.andy.sandbox.cloudmade.com/tiles/cycle/%z/%x/%y.png

    Greetings

    Horst

  44. Horst Says:

Oops, i pasted just an example for Open Sea Map. the real thing of course is:

    hi, thanks for publishing openseamap,
ist it possible to publish the settings for freietonne.de?
this is also an opensource project.

    with the best regards

  52. Hans Says:

did anyone make the xlm for http://www.openfietskaart.nl

  53. Horst Says:

    Hi everybody,

@heinz-57: Update means "update to the blog", not "update to the software". In order to use the additional map sources, you will need to add to your configuration file MapSources.xml, located in the installation directory of NaviComputer on your PocketPC.

@benny: http://map.search.ch/ seems easily doable. Will add a script to my site when I find time...

@Robert: Unfortunately freietonne is not as easy as OpenSeaMap, because it uses a so-called text layer instead of just graphical tile overlays. This is assembled from small icons and their individual coordinates. Of course, doing this in a PHP script is possible, but a lot more complicated thjat what I did in my scripts so far.

@Hans: http://www.openfietskaart.nl seems unreachable at the moment.

    Greetings

    Horst

  54. Horst Says:

    Hi again,

the map tiles used in the mapmerge scripts have been published under various Creative Commons licenses. I am therfore obliged to attribute derivative works with the names of the original creators. In order to read these, and know what you can and cannot legally do with the merged tiles, please surf over to

    http://www.recomedia.de/mapmerge/

After picking your preferred language, you can read the legal stuff as well as descriptions of available map sources and how to use them.

    Greetings

    Horst

  55. Horst Says:

    Hi,

unfortunately, my web hoster has shut down recomedia.de domain. I am working on getting it online again, but in the meantime map sources based on the mapmerge set of server based scripts will not work. I apologize for the inconvenience, and will let you know when it is working again...

  61. Horst Says:

    Hi everybody,

mapemerge is back to normal service with a new webhoster.

However, to better separate the mapmerge hobby site from the commercial stuff hosted on http://www.recomedia.de, all URLs changed from
    http://www.recomedia.de/mapmerge/...
    to
    http://mapmerge.recomedia.de/...
So please update your MapSources.xml files accordingly, and everything should work as it used to before the server shutdown.

    I am confused a bit.

Hello, does anybody know how to download Virtual Earth Maps (Satellite and Normal View) ? I am going to Crete in a few days and want to track some expeditions, but OSM and Google don't even closely reach the amount of streets available as Virtual Earth (Bing Maps). I have played around a lot with the Bing Maps Tile Server URI which you see when going to Bing Maps and running a tool like Live HTTP Headers in Firefox. I couldn't figure out how to modify the URL for NaviMapper software. Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I have a WM device license, so caching the map data actually IS allowed in contradiction to caching Google Maps data.

    hi,
if you're looking for a good tool to download maps, with a lot more possibilities to download, then you should try "mobile atlas creator". In my opinion this tool is much better as the navimapper.

    hi Rian,
if you want to download maps from google maps china (ditu), you can download them with mobile atlas creator.
    It is also freeware.

And with OpenStreeMap is no problem, has anybody can fix this issue?

  91. Horst Says:

    Hi all,

unfortunately, I have to announce the end of the MapMerge service.

Due to the amount of traffic my script and server have imposed on the openseamap and opencaclemap servers, they have blacklisted my server. This means I cannot get the map tiles any more that the scripts need to work.

For me, this seems in line with the removal of opencyclemap from the official map sources for NaviComputer.

Consequently, the subdomain mapmerge.recomedia.de has been removed. I recommend to remove all map sources referring to it from your MapSources.xml file.

    Sad greetings

Hi, I was trying Mobile Atlas Creator, but results were strange... Something was downloaded, nmap file was created, but the file acts strange in NaviComputer, for example: nothing is shown or there is only the view on whole earth (lowest zoom level) and I cannot move or zoom the map... I don't know if this is problem of Mobile Atlas Creator or NaviComputer, but something is wrong :)

  93. Robby Says:

    hi folks,

    @Ryan....
I just gave you a possibility to download the tiles,
the tiles are so accurate as the provider (google maps ditu) wants that they are accurate. As you already remarked, OpenStreetMap is working fine.

    @David....
did you defined the different zooms before creating the atlas?
I must say I triede different maps and formats and the work all fine. If you have still some problems you can cotact me per mail.

  94. David Says:

Yes, I spent nearly one more hour trying to figure out why it doesn't work (why it works so strange) and trying different combination of settings.

  110. Josh Says:

Openstreetmap.org is now applying this rule:

    >>
    Bulk Downloading

Bulk downloading is strongly discouraged. Do not download tiles unnecessarily.

In particular, downloading significant areas of tiles at zoom levels 17, 18 or 19 for offline or later usage is forbidden without prior consultation with a System Administrator. These tiles are generally not available (cached) on the server in advance, and have to be rendered specifically for those requests, putting an unjustified burden on the available resources.

To avoid having your access blocked, please discuss your requirement with system administrators either via their wiki pages or on the IRC channel prior to starting.
    <<

    from

    http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tile_usage_policy

So you don't get 17 and 18 zoom levels.

I have found a German Openstreetmap tile server for Europe only that works fine which takes a daily download. Not to sure whether I should flag this one up else you will be all taking downloads and we are back to square one. You need to edit the XML to allow and study the syntax to get the extra bits. It's a four line syntax.

Soon be Easter so getting the downloads ready for the trip.

    16
    file:///c:/Program%20Files/Maperitive/Tiles/%z/%x/%y.png

but it doesn't seem to work, although I tested the URL in my browser.

Is there any method to convert this tiles into an .nmap file? It would be nice to make custom maps, and to reduce tile fetching impact to map servers.

    Cheers.

  114. Josh Says:

ShuCo... you have Mobile Atlas Creator which you can use with Navicomputer. There are a range of maps available. I wouldn't be too negative about Navimaper in terms of accessing map tile servers since it can be configured to sources you find using the Firefox trick talked about whilst the likes of Atlas Mobile Creator can't.... I use both.

You can normaly expect building up maps for holiday destinations will take days, but well worth the effort. You only need zoom level 18 or 17 when on your feet. About 14 for driving. So you only download the detail of where you need it. OpenStreet OSM ones render well for mobile use rather.

  115. Heinz Says:

    Hello
an answer for "Seidel" and "Josh" concerning additional maps. Outdooractive Germany, Austria and Suedtirol works on my HTC without any problem!
Concerning "Wander-, Fahrrad- und Reit-Karte" I found out: the old adress wouldn't work any longer, there is an new URL. I added "http://topo.wanderreitkarte.de/topo/%z/%x/%y.png" to NaviMapper mapsources; but there is a problem: it shows the layer of "Wanderreitkarte" only- the layer of OSM is missing! That makes no sense. I corresonded with "Nop" (editor of Wanderreitkarte"- cann't help. The multi- layer problem would be a problem of Navicomputer!!

One more INTERESTING MAP for Bavaria would be "Hubermedia Bavaria"- a great map! In edition 1.7 of "Mobile Atlas Creator" (in 1.9 one cann't chosse Hubermedia anymore!!) it is possible to save the maps as "png" and "kal". Has anybody an idea how to manage it getting nmap- files for Navicomputer?

Some more UK / England map sources....

Ordnance Survey the Governments Mapping people decided to make their data free or at least some of it, otherwise called "Ordnance Survey Opendata".

    This is discussed in:

    http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Ordnance_Survey_Opendata#OS_StreetView

The OpenStreetMap people have been playing with this data, working with it etc. There are examples on the web of comparisons between OSM and what OS [Ordnance Survey] have.

    e.g.

    http://edgemaster.dev.openstreetmap.org/streetview_tiles/ossv.html?zoom=15&lat=60.16917&lon=-1.16243&layers=BTF

Some of this released data has been put up in the normal OSM tile server format, particularly the "OS StreetView" data, found here:

    http://os.openstreetmap.org/

This data can also be called up through the OSM Potlash editor, hence the guidance in the text around accreditation.

Since it's public domain data it is an additional map source that you can put up in your device, zoom levels 7 to 17. This is basically low level buildings and streets.

    OS.openstreetmap.org
    7
    17
    http://a.os.openstreetmap.org/sv/%z/%x/%y.png
    http://b.os.openstreetmap.org/sv/%z/%x/%y.png
    http://c.os.openstreetmap.org/sv/%z/%x/%y.png

I think the blog software will corrupt part of the syntax but the parameters should be clear.

The other related item is that the OSM people also have a web site of out of copyright maps for the UK. These can be got at via:

    http://ooc.openstreetmap.org/

Here the syntax for the first one follows the lines:

    Out of copyright ooc.openstreetmap.org/
    7
    15
    http://a.ooc.openstreetmap.org/npe/%z/%x/%y.png
    http://b.ooc.openstreetmap.org/npe/%z/%x/%y.png
    http://c.ooc.openstreetmap.org/npe/%z/%x/%y.png

Other more recent OS maps are available to the above but are in copyright although you can stumble over them on the net in tile servers. These are useful for definitive footpaths that may have been left off the OSM version.

    ditto re the syntax enjoy.

PS thanks Heinz for the information.

Update of ÖPNV Karte [public transport routes]

This one is listed at the top of the blog but it's now continued it's development beyond Germany into Europe and the World so it would appear, see.

    http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/%C3%96pnvkarte

The tile server mentioned in the blog covers Europe and goes from zoom levels 1-18. Elements of the syntax are:

    Opnvkarte.de
    1
    18
    http://tile.xn--pnvkarte-m4a.de/tilegen/%z/%x/%y.png

In it's worldwide form covered in

    http://öpnvkarte.de/

The tile server seems slower [different server indexed] so I can't vouch that it will work so well for the States and elsewhere or not at all they seem to have a performance issue, for what it's worth the elements of the syntax are:

    Opnvkarte.de
    1
    18
    http://tile.memomaps.de/tilegen/%z/%x/%y.png

There might be a better tile server for the worldwide implementation if any one knows of it, post it up. eg. the tile.memomaps.de isn't as fast as the tile.xn--pnvkarte-m4a.de [World v Europe implementation of the data].

The Irish have their own coordinate system which I suspect is embedded into this as well. Bing and UK OS have an agreement which is handy for us users since it gets us down to level 15, 16 atlas creator with an old version... Bing maps more up to date. I might say I always buy the paper OS map as well.

Think the best hope with OSI is to find the map displayed in the Google or Bing methods and then bingo unless there is some mapping expert out there that puts it into their hobbyist project who then gets hassled by the Irish. Think they are protecting their product and flogging it to a select few. I see OSI have sold it to Geolive who flog it on for use in Garman and platforms for mobile use... interesting I see Geolive have a Windows Mobile 7 application. I didn't find the maps in Google or Bing form.

So bottom line Irish coordinate system and we need some pixies from the bottom of the garden to fix it. If anybody does solve this let one know since I'm interested as well.

I'm looking for clues on Mapion for Japan... any one ?. I believe this is the same / similar issue as above. Other than that I do have four other map sources. Never can have too many maps to flick between.

  124. Josh Says:

W Earb .... I did reply to your message at the weekend but since I mentioned websites it's got to be moderated and Mr Developer's isn't around to do it so it seems.... it wasn't good news mind you.

  125. W Earb Says:

Thanks for trying Josh. It is a pity home-made maps cannot be made for use with Navicomputer. I have had to resort to making maps for use with Maplorer to get around my problem. I would have preferred to use Navicombuter, as I think it is a better programme, but if it doesn't do what is needed.......

  126. Josh Says:

Well W Earb when the developer clear my post you will see the links. Basically the Irish maps are in a funny projection, other people who I suspect are professional digital mapping people have been using the tiles with other packages. There is an Android based one that people have read the files into. For Navicomputer if you find one of Uwe posts and click his name you will find his python code which is the closest I've seen for playing around with the Navicomputer tiles. I fear I need to be 30 years younger to progress this one, so will leave it up to the youngsters. I'm hoping it will be cracked by the time I want to go to Ireland.

Basically what I said in the other post is if the Irish survey service provided their tiles to say VE as the British service do it would have been different, but these as far as I can tell are non standard [I have read it, the projection is non standard and has to be adjusted else everything is out, it has a code serial number whilst the ones we use are in something else, with a code serial number]. Obviously the developer of Navicomputer would know what to do with all of this, but people in the digital tile server area like to protect their goodies even if it's questionable that they own them in the first place [thinking of an Openstreet associated company that likes to get on it's bike about stuff and charge for mobile versions of their maps which come from open data that I myself may have crowd sourced into.... that's not playing the game as far as I'm concerned].

Perhaps the Irish economy will get worse and they will flog their OSI maps to Google or Bing and take the profit :) . Failing that one suspects that one will have to wait for some enterprising person to do something. It's probably EC money that they are using to produce their pretty maps with then trying to flog them on. I can only think the market is a little limited for that one.

So bottom line is no XML file commands and it's not an open source map any how ....... although other platforms are doing things with these maps in a hobbyist capacity so it would seem.

  127. Developer Says:

    Hi guys,

sorry, I had missed the post from Josh. I have approved it now.
Thank you Josh for your great posts and for helping other users!

  128. W Earb Says:

Thanks Josh. I have read your original post and I had already tried to make use of Python, but it was too complicated for me. I only wanted to get these maps, because they are the only ones that I can find that have the Irish forestry roads included. I have managed to get around my problem by using Maplorer (would prefer to use Navicomputer) and converting the Irish coordinates with a programme called Grid InQuest, which other readers here might find useful.

btw I love the Maplorer function that allows for corrections by allowing users to "set current position". This can be used when one is at a position that they are certain of, but can see from the locator on the screen that it is a little off, choosing the correct position with the stylus repositions the map correctly. A very neat function, as long as you are certain of your current position.

  129. Josh Says:

Question for Mr Developer, I see that Oxusmaps uses SQLite, is this interoperable with the NMAP files which are SQLite as I under stand it. i.e. whether the NMAP file was that unique or whether it is generated by other packages other than Mobac. Was wondering whether I should look at Oxusmaps... the XML file commands seem interesting on the forum :) . Things I wasn't aware off and didn't think were possible.

W Earb after you did this what did you do with the file, did you read... ah well I think I know the answer you used Maplorer to access the material, Grid InQuest to change the projection, then went on to use the Windows mobile program. Now if we could get Oxusmaps working with NMAP file that would be useful.

Clearly all of this for educational purposes. I just educated myself on some missing things via studying some of the XML files on the Oxusmap forum this afternoon with effect.

Thanks for the tip on Maplorer and Grid InQuest, but clearly it would be good to get some inter operability in the NMAP files with other packages, although saying this the Navicomputer / Navimapper software you don't often want to look elsewhere except to check out XML code and HTTPFox when things aren't as expected [unless you are going to Ireland or want a full range of Japanese maps, or OS down to level 16 etc].

I love the ability to grab some more elements of a map on the device when away when you have forgotten to down load or weren't expecting to be stranded away from home owing to Iceland ash in a desert oasis in Jordan waiting for the flights to get back to normal :) or anything else similar. The ability to add the desert fortresses of Jordan and desert oasis wetland reserve came in handy all from the app to spin out another 5 days of the 5 days already chilling out weighting for a flight last year. Third visit to Japan coming up soon and I've got 9 GB of NMAP files ready and waiting so far. For hikes, train rides and car navigation, the latter you juggle the windows device to look like that car's Japanese sat nav screen. Zoom in and out on the car's sat nav and push the ladder going up Japanese character set symbol when the zoom of the screen on the car and the windows device are pointing in the same place and then off you go keeping the Japanese lady off the express ways by checking out what Navicomputer is saying. Also you are a bit frightened to touch the car's satnav sinc

  130. Josh Says:

since you don't totally understand what all the button's do and you really aren't going to type the place name in, in Japanese, so it's zoom and shoot. Cross match up with Navicomputer to check how it's going.

Tip for today on combined Navicomputer / Japaneze car sat interoperability :) ... given the other language difficulties plotting out where you are going, when you are there has many uses just for travelling, let alone on the ground walking.

I have mentioned BikeHike GPX plotting site before which is excellent for producing tracks either automated using the Google navigation engine or one based on Openstreet. The latter works obviously on footpaths on Openstreet. BikeHike also has the UK OS maps in it for plotting walking routes. If you toggle this off to show elevation that BikeHike can be dragged across to the other side of the world and will happily work universally outside Europe with Google / Openstreet cycle maps. You can also plot out routes via Google satellite images if a track / route doesn't exist, so very handy for laying down automated or manual tracks with option for driving, cycle, walking and avoiding major roads etc.

How to include enforcement data (mainly automatic speed controls) in the maps ?

  133. josh Says:

Louis, no it's not possible, although if you had all the speed cameras as x,y coordinates you can do this via making a gpx track using one of the gps tools. I have done this with Fon spots....

Really with Navicomputer you have an off road tool although you can use it on road it is designed I would say for general navigation.... it does work at 32,000 ft over Russia... ,I tried... I recall it said we were going at 600 mph.

  134. Louis Says:

Thanks for the information. If the track points are not linked by lines, that is interesting for my need which is just to display the position of the very strong 'radars' proposed by the police in France.

    What are Fon spots ?

About using NaviComputer in plane, I'll certainly try because we cannot control the map which is displayed in front of the seat. When seeing points on the ground from the window, we need to have a map... So, interesting to know that NaviComputer works in this case !

I tried this morning to get the speed of my high speed train but it seems that its windows are too 'opaque'. The GPS status was always Scan or Off. Did you try this ?

  135. Josh Says:

I can report it works fine on Japsneze Shinkansen trains giving 160 mph..... also -1,700 ft on the Dead Sea below sea level. Also it finds 13 sattllites in Japan some of the time think it's security issues so US has China and Korea well covered and close to the Syria border it gets scrambled and also faithfully recorded our track when Jordanian security guards bundled us into a 4x4 machine gun touting vehicle since we were too close to the Syria border... 101 uses of Navicomputer.

I see your not a Fonnarien... google Fon.

  136. Louis Says:

So, with your very large experience, we may ask some little improvements to NaviComputer. Is there a particular topic to do that ? Maybe I have to donate before doing that ...

About Fon, I can use FreeWifi spots but it seems that is available only in France.

  138. Andreas Says:

hi, does anybody know how to get maps from naviki.org into nmap-format for navicomputer?
what do i have to add to the xml-file?

  139. Josh Says:

    Andreas

What that map consists of is Google map with Openstreet data placed on top of it and it's integrated in the browser to look how it does, expressed another way it's two maps overlayed. Navicomputer doesn't do overlays, I didn't try since I know this was the issue with another outdoor map for Germany. You can use Firefox HttpFox addin to Firefox to study the tiles, this is what I did so that's how I know what it's doing. If you just configured the routes all you would get is a spider web without the background detail that is being lifted from Google or the other way round but not both together.

There have been in the past people who allowed you to assemble your own slippy maps from different layers but I don't know of any at the minute, somebody else may. The last one that was available was closed down. The Navicomputer saving grace is that normally these type of maps are pre-rendered to one layer but in this one they aren't they are using your browser to do the overlay. May be a useful extension for the developer to implement.

Slippy map sources is what you want for Navicomputer but beware of those dears that like to talk butch about bandwidth and having your own server;).... such a bore.

Back to mapping may be what you are after is the GPX routes to over lay over your other downloaded maps, I think that programme does it, there are other German ones. I like bikehike co uk where you toogle to show elevation which takes off the English Ordance survey top right and you can toggle between google or openstreetmaps and either use google or openstreet routine algorithm or not, pick mode of transport and route type and it does everything. So you can use it for navigation to where you want to drive to in foreign parts and also generate the route for the day. Off road the it's going to be openstreet, you save the GPX as a track and copy to the log directory. Why we take OS maps off is so you can use the application across the world but for England the OS maps are fine.

There is a code example in the link which is probably how the guy produced the map in the first place.

    http://sewiki.iai.uni-bonn.de/teaching/labs/xp/2009b/seminar/slippy_maps

It's a good read on the subject.

The DIY solution without programming would be one where you offered up the elements and it did it all for you. The only reason for this would be to get round the issue identified.

    SOLUTION

Also Mobac has a facility to handle multilayer maps, just Google "Custom multi-layer map sources mobac" and read the read me, so I reckon you could do it that way or even build your own mix and match via this method.

OK just did it, rather than saying you can. You need a more recent version of Mobac, the one where the goodies have been removed. This supports the XML files that you put in the mapsources directory, the older version with the goodies in it [tiles that other people ganged up on the developer to get removed] doesn't use the mapsources directory. Using the mapsource directory you create the customMultiLayerMapSource file as an XML, take the example first in the readme to test it out. Then using the HttpFox trick understand the tile use on the said site we are talking about. The "hills" one you put instead of the first one shown in the example. Here you need to know that Mobac uses {$x} as the x value that is substituted in etc for y and z. Like the XML in Navicomputer the & becomes the special one of & and ; (take out the spaces to make five characters long had to type it like this since it gets suppressed I think here). Then on the second layer put the custom web ones in instead of what in the example. Make zoom level 0 to 15 and it works. Edit the names as well in the commands as well.

The only thing is going to be if you are new to tile commands and XML edits to get the parameters in you will have to master this as well.

So this is good this must be the solution to the multilayer map issue of Navicomputer:).

The other interesting piece of software is "maperitive" where you would need some spare time to get on top off. I know this one comes up on threads, looks interesting from the video on the site.

Loading Up Other Mapping Images into Navicomputer
    ==================================

When all fails and you can't get that map source into Navicomputer with those maps that don't use the standard projection [WGS84] and tile serving as per OpenStreet et al or QuadKey's [Microsoft way] then you can resort to image capture and making your own tiles. Up to now in the discussion a way to get them into Navicomputer hasn't been covered either it's not been done or people have done it but never said how !. Discussion above covered an Irish map that defeated methods and they resorted to alternative method [August / September 2011] - could have been better not sure.

In the old days of GPS mapping people cut and pasted their images together and made their own maps, so if all else fails it's back to old methods.

    1. First get the FireFox addon Screengrab - this allows you to right click and save a PNG image of a screen or alternatively if the map is in some other form it can be scanned in.

    2. Next get MapCruncher Beta for Bing Maps - that's 3.2.0 - there is a 3.2.4 when development stopped but I've been able to find that one on the net. Don't use the 2.0 version of it, it doesn't work. If you Google "mapcruncher id=22420" that takes you to the download. Development stopped in October 2007, it was developed by Microsoft Research to enable developers to register other sourced maps with VE now Bing so you could publish the maps on your web site.... however it makes nice quad keyed maps.

    3. If you Google "mapcruncher video" there is a handy training video in it's use but don't get sucked into using the older version use the one in 2. above

    4. Get your source image say with the Firefox screengrab.... now you may be able to paste together other PNG images via other methods making a bigger source which would be good. Big sources are good. However if your quarry if just a smaller screen grab map you can go ahead.... do the process. Mapcruncher gives you some output which is handy to see what it's done. The tiles go into the directory Layer_NewLayer which is in the output area that you were asked to set up when using the tool.

    5. Next use Mobac - you need version 1.92 or above. Best to go to the latest for this. The directory of Mobac Mapsources needs you to create and save an XML file in it to tell Mobac where the quadkey tiles are stored. If you Google "Import maps georeferenced using MapCruncher...?" there is a discussion thread on reading Mapcruncher tiles into Mobac with a downloadable file. Just edit this that someone usefully put up with where the Layer_NewLayer directory is on your computer. You can also edit the line that says Custom... with a description of Mapcruncher Tiles since that is what Mobac displays on the drop down.

    6. Pick it off Mobac as a source, do the normal Mobac stuff and Bob's your Uncle - as we say in the UK

As mentioned I suspect you can go to town and pull together your PNG maps, make a master big one using other methods [people traditionally did in the past] and then Mapcrunch it, Mobac it and write out in Navicomputer tile structure. If anybody knows of the tools to do that with - please post up, although one suspects that projection could turn into an issue after a while sowing up file or perhaps you just do that manually without anything too clever. For the moment I'm pleased that I can get into Navicomputer small areas of tricky sourced maps for hiking in the mountains of Slovenia latter in the year. Obvious it goes without saying that you can legally use whatever you are interested in.

    Day2 of MapCruncker

The tool actually works very well. It does work out what to do with overlapping screen saves at the same original zoom level and will integrate into one big file sowing the map screen grabs together - this is done automatically. The tutorial video suggests six points to register a map. You actually require many more. The accuracy of the match is shown when you lock the the points. The process is to find a common point between the Bing map and the map to be created, you do this locking and unlocking the points. The net suggests 16 points or more going up to 40 or so. I've been getting 40 or so as you page across the map checking alignment. It's also said in the instructions use the hybrid map so that errors in the Bing maps digitisation do not influence the success. The error of the match is shown after the lock on the points is made, so this acts as a guide and whether the left hand map on the screen looks twisted - if so a point[s] is wrong.

More on MapCruncher - PDF Files and 64 bit
    ============================

One of the import options for tiling imported maps is PDF, however Mapcruncher was written by Microsoft Research sometime ago, it trips on 64bit Windows with an error message. There is a solution on the web but I opted to use the laptop with 32 bit since I couldn't get the 64 bit fix working, knowledge of Visual Studio is required. The 64 bit instructions are on the link I gave above down the bottom with a further link.

MapCruncher is an excellent piece of software for pulling in maps to Navicomputer via Mobac where they are obviously public domain but are not provided in a form where you can setup the Mapsource XML file to import the tiles. The screen shot option I covered above. Sometimes detailed tourist town maps are provided on line in PDF format for foreign parts e.g. Japan marking up hotels, shopping centres, photo stores [:)] etc and you can supplement your collection of the town maps with these.

So I wouldn't under estimate the uses of MapCruncher with Navicomputer. I just got very good alignment with a Japanese tourist town map PDF and the Bing Hybrid map registering overlay using circa 75 points around the edge and a few in the middle and across.

  145. Josh Says:

As a footnote Microsoft have now sorted out the broken link so you can load up the last beta version of the software. If you Google "MapCruncher-3.2.4.zip" that take you to the download. Great of them to fix the link for me.

I find it a very natty piece of software to bring in other sources of maps expressed as JPEGs, PDFs etc. It's impressive in how it interpolates your imported map image against the Bing map or imagery for rendering the map in the the standard projection used by Bing, Google and Openstreet producing tiles that can be imported into Navicomputer via Mobac. Useful for those tourist office maps available online and those other map sources that are not friendly via projection, tiling etc. You could even photograph maps with a reasonable camera and macro lens and get them in that way for your own personal use. So it's quite a useful tool when travelling to off beat places where you find what you were looking for but it defies all techniques to import in the standard tiled fashion.

When I previously questioned the accuracy of the projection little did I know at that time that was around a road that had been moved in a valley in Slovenia as a park development but not updated on any of the maps used including the Slovenia's own national maps, Google and Bing. No satellite imagery was available to link this mythical road to the actual satellite image hence why things were not looking right on the ground with the map not collating on the ground. The establishment of the park moved the road.... However it was clear that the main road into the valley no longer went through the farm but took a new top road :) .
