Released version 0.93

The main purpose of version 0.93 is fixing the issue with the OpenStreetMap map source.

But there are also some small new things included: By tapping on a POI marker on the map, the name of the POI will be shown on the map. Your current distance and bearing to the POI will be displayed in the top bar.

By tapping the topbar, it is possible to switch between different display modes (Altitude/Speed --> Location(Lat/Lng) --> POI distance/bearing)

ChangeLog:

NaviMapper:

  • Fix: OpenStreetMap map source

NaviComputer:

  • New: Possibility to select a POI on the map and display its name
  • New: Possibility to display distance and bearing to the selected POI in the top bar
  • New: Possibility to display current GPS location (Lat/Long) in the top bar
  • Fix: OpenStreetmap map source

Please Note: Unfortunately the OCM server administrator asked me to remove OpenCycleMap from the MapSources.xml. Too much traffic was caused by NaviComputer/NaviMapper.

When I try to open the maps I have downloaded an error message appears and I have to close the program. I have reinstalled all (program and NETFC 3.5). This happens since version 0.92.
Great software, I hope the problem will be solved.

  4. Flek Says:

Great work - Fantastic piece of software and now even better. Looking forward to giving it a go this weekend with the OS maps. Thank You!

    Please add landscape view support;]

  6. Nebiros Says:

When I track into a .gpx file, and I open it in RouteConverter (http://www.routeconverter.de/) I get wrong positioning and faulty waypoints.

I managed to change te NaviComputer generated .gpx file so it opens correctly.
    I've changed - gpx version="1.1" - into - gpx version="1.0" - in the 2nd line of the file.

I don't know if this is a NaviComputer or a Routeconverter related issue, but another application which generates .gpx files doesn't have this problem.

    Greetings,

    Nebiros

    Very good mobile software !!
I've got a problem with navimapper: every time I try to download a map, the program crashes after some seconds.
    Any idea ?

  8. Andi Says:

Could you please add the possibility to pause and resume the GPS-Tracking?
Would be a nice feature when tracing longer trips such as Transalps etc.

    cheers,

I installed 0.93 over 0.92, but I do not see any difference in the UI (i.e., pop-up menu different from that shown in the website, and does not zoom out, etc.). Any tips?

Oops...please ignore my previous post. I should've read the FAQ before posting... Thanks for a wonderful app!

Hi. I like version 0.93, with one very major exception. I use the program for primarily for hiking, and need the topo features from the OpenCycle map. Is it possible to reinstall the OpenCycle source, or do I need to go back to version 0.92? Thanks.

  12. osama Says:

This is really great,, I was wondering if we can have the feature to make the heading as per the car heading rather north.. or at elast t obe able to switch between them,, much more easy to navigate this way..

    thanks alot

I am having problems with navimaper , I cant see the maps at all updating on my computer, on the PDA it works like a charm and is very fast..

I hope you can help, I am using the latest version 0.93..

    thnaks alot..

  14. Bogo Says:

    @Tom,

I think you can overwrite the file MapSources.xml from version 0.93 with the one found in version 0.92 ;)

tipically you can find this file in C:\Program Files\NaviComputer\NaviMaper\

  15. Peter Says:

First - Thanks for this great program!
But I have a problem: when I launch the program, I get the top menu bar and the two soft buttons at the bottom ( the left button - fullscreen - without function), but I have no access to the bottom buttons (Example: no Track-Button, no Overlay-Button is there) on my horizontal screen device ( 240 x 320 ). It is a HP Ipaq 914 smartphone. Maybe it is possible to change this ?
Maybe it is a idea to but this button-functions in the menu.

  16. Cyril Says:

    Hello.

I thank you for your very good work.
There is a problem with NaviMapper, maps do not display under Windows 7 64x, even by using the compatibility Vista.

    Thank you for your assistant.

  17. As Says:

Thanks, this is a great program. One question: how do I delet a POI which has already been in on my map?

  18. As Says:

...just one point -I use it on my mobile HTC HD2

  19. Ann Says:

Help! I just upgraded to WM 6.5 and now I can't upgrade again to .NET Compact Framework 3.5. The error I get says 'can't install due to an invalid setup file'. I've tried all sorts of reboots and reinstalls and still the same error. I LOVE this program and hoping it would be as easy to set up on 6.5 as it was on 6.1.

    Any help would be appreciated!!!!

  20. Horst Says:

    Hello,

my warm thanks to the developers of a really cool application. It is just so easy to use, plus has the best map downloader I have seen.

Even though this seems not officially supported, I have installed it on Windows Mobile 5, and it is (mostly) working. The only exception I have found so far is that I can't seem to be able to connect to the internal GPS of my Ameo (HTC X7500). I have seen it work on a HTC Touch Pro with WM6.1, though. So I suspect that there is some incompatibility between WM5 and WM6 with respect to how the GPS device is handled.

I would appreciate an option that allows me to select the COM port to use for GPS. That's how other GPS applications work for me, regardless of wheter I use the internal or an external Bluetooth GPS device.

Other items on my wish list are:
    - Support map overlays (as per my comment regarding alternate map sources)
    - Allow import of self-scanned maps
    - Option to draw course line line from current position to next waypoint
    - Optionally display bearing of travel instead of Altitude
    - Allow to tap screen to center, double-tap to center and zoom in
    - Support up/down hardware buttons for zoom in/out

I know, that's many wishes at once, but it will be interesting to hear what others think about these proposed new features.

Be assured, with the exception of more flexible GPS port handling, all of these wishes are pure luxury, on top of the easiest to use raster mapping app I have seen (and I have tried a lot of them).

  21. joecoco Says:

encountered a hiccup (version 0.91, not mentioned in updated items thru 0.92, 0.93) when saving a track, and changed file name, if used symbol (">"), program exited in error. no problem for adding space. Good program anyway it is as when restarted the program and try to start a new track, message prompt the existence of previous unended track, thereby could save it again.

  22. Tippy Says:

    Peter,
The 914 has an option to change screen orientation in the setup.
Try changing it to portrait and see if Navi works better. The app was designed to function initially with portrait mode, then adapted for rectangular screens.
Starting it in Landscape may cause the problem you are experiencing.

    Best wishes
    tippy

  23. Tippy Says:

    joe,

It's not a hiccup. Some symbology is not acceptable in construction of file names. The use of ., and others will be rejected.

    Best wishes,
    tippy

  24. Terry Says:

Greetings from -1,289 ft below sea level, at the Dead Sea... well +200 ft above where hotel is purched. Navimapper has worked like a dream on my Leo taking to all the points and tracks I prepared before leaving for Jordan. Also getting one through towns after diversions and new roads.

Great piece of software for off beaten track trips.

  25. Peter Says:

    @Tippy
thanks for your quick answer, but the Ipaq 914c has no function or tool to change screen orientation from landscape to portrait.
What does you mean with the option for change screen orientation in the setup ? After flashing the device ? In 914c winmobile 6.1 there is no such function.
    See also here:
    h t t p://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=545312
I testet so many change-screen-orientation tools - nothing work.
I hope you or anybody else can help.

    Sorry for my bad english.

    thanks a lot too

  26. Olivier Says:

    Hi,

Thank for these great job (ie Navicomputer)

I'm an GT-I8000 (ie Samsung Omnia II) owner and have first installed the specific version. But I had two major quirk :
    - Online mode is rejected by openstreetmaps server
    - Navi mapper do not display the initial map on Vista SP2

I look at the version number and see 0.8. Then I decide to uninstall it (but I leave the framework and samsung sdk) and to install the 0.93 version.
    - Online mode is functionnal.
    - Navi mapper show the initial map.

Will built-in magnetic compass functional ?

    Greetings,

    Olivier

  27. Tom Says:

    Ann-

I had the same problem eons ago. Not all versions of NetCF 3.5 are the same. Had to try 3 different sources before I found one that worked for me, both with with WM6.1 and now WM6.5. The current version of WM6.5.5 that I am using has NetCF 3.7 cooked in, so I cannot give you a link, but maybe you can google "NetCF 3.7 cab download" and see what you get. If I recall correctly, the cab worked better that the exe.

  29. tommie Says:

    Hey,
Thank you for this fine app.
I use it on my bike.
It would be nice if it have an option so the map on the display always point in the north so it would be easy to now witch direction i have to turn.

  30. tommie Says:

oops sorry i mean in the direction i ride in stead of the north.

  31. Sarah Says:

    great app.

    please add pinchtozoom.

  32. marco Says:

I think is an error to delete OpenCycleMap from our possibilities, it was the most used, I think lot of people will not use this program any more!!!

  33. Warren Says:

    Awesome program thanks.
My main reason for downloading and supporting this software with donations is to increase my preparedness for disasters, both personal disasters (like losing my cell phone's internet access), and regional disasters (like an earthquake). I want my smartphone to have onboard maps so I can find my way around even if the cell data network is unavailable to me. I also want my entire state's map downloaded and available to me but I don't want to be a leech by starting a 2 day download from that openstreetmap site. That could spoil it for everyone. So here's my question. Is there somewhere that I can download Washington state (direct or torrent) as a complete file?

  34. cheng Says:

would really love the landscape support !

  35. Manfred Says:

Landscape is no problem, just download a tool from xda and holding the send key will rotate your screen.

    Good Job.
Please, Put an option to select 2Xmode by default.
    Olders need Magnifier always :-)

  37. Jsouff Says:

Hi there, Great peace of software indeed. Just very recently installed and tried it ! Thanks
Question though ... Is there a mean to set a Waypoint at the exact current position instead of from a 'tap' on the screen, which is a bit approximative .

Also, I've seen I can addd a waypoint , either to my favorites, or to the current 'track'. Do you plan to add some waypoint management, a.o. to facilitate their display by group, and the creation of 'waypoint only' GPXs.
Such a GPX overlay could be a first step to 'waypoint navigation'.

Also these waypoint overlays could be created from the PC mapping application, but separately from the map files themselve, as a preparation for a new hike ?

    ... my five cents ;)

    Thanks again for that application.

  38. Gfy Says:

    Hallo
I found here an usefull piece of Software.

    - The Lat/lng indication are only 3 digit, i prefert 5-6 digits for geocaching
    - get the Lat/Lng position from GPS for a new POI.

    thx

  39. Jsouff Says:

    About tracking resolution...
Would it be possible to accelerate enhance tracking resolution ? Every 5 seconds seems OK for a hiker, but for a cycler every seconds is much more accurate. ... or leave the choice as an option ? (1 sec, 5 secs, 15 secs,... 1 meter, 5 meters, 25 meters, ....
An adaptive algorythm, related to lateral accelerations (direction changes) would be optimum.

I understand that maintaining GPXs in memory at such resolution can be havy. Though , I'd prefer to maintain full track information in a compact local format (NMEA ?) and to export them, either in same local format or in GPX format as an option, with maybe some other information filters ?

    Thx again.

  40. sonstwer Says:

It would be nice if the new Lat/Lng display the information in degres, minutes and seconds and not in the decimal form.

  41. niemand Says:

It would be nice to sort maps by name, date or source.

  42. Propheticus Says:

After some testing of similar GPS-trackers I found this programs to be the most user-friendly and reliable (i.e. keeps tracking without stopping for 10 mins halfway during a cycling trip...). The standard interval of 10sec and the optional 5sec is too slow for someone riding a race-bike @30-35km/h though. It's now cutting corners and missing distance in comparison with my speedometer (~2,5% on a trip without even that much corners).
The fact you can use off-line maps is a real 'selling' point, as is the reliability (no gaps in the track or premature ending). Improvements are possible in the interval area, options for a 1 or 2 sec interval would be appreciated. You can still apply the minimum movement check, which is now fixed to 3 meters, to prevent the aggregation of useless points.

  43. Gustavo Says:

Thank you, thank you, thank you... great app! i hope it becames my next tom tom!

    Just great job.
    Gustavo

  44. Tippy Says:

    Propheticus...

Ah, Propheticus, very Profound! However at the present time, I suggest you slow down. :) It is difficult to constantly "adapt" the program for the many, many users needs. Some users have tried to use it in an airplane.

All things can be done with time and funds, but the app is free, and makes enormous demands on the Developer's time and resources since it is not his primary occupation.

He works to pay bills like the rest of us.
He is however very amenable to ideas, and reads all posts.
Never can tell what shows up in a new version!

    Thanks for your comments,

    Regards

  45. Tippy Says:

    GUSTAVO,

NAVICOMPUTER was not meant to be a "next TomTom" in any respect. It was designed to be a simple to use, free, plotter for generalized use.
I doubt it will every develop into a full navigational GPS package as I have discussed this with the Developer.
There are other apps out there closer to the "next TomTom" that are also free and available, but don't ask me to name them. I am a loyal "Navier". :) :)

  47. sprog Says:

I've noticed that when saving track log files (especially at 5sec interval) and at faster speeds, the resulting speed plot is all jagged at the recording. It's almost as if the timestamp is being rounded off? For instance, the speed might be 30mph (and this is displayed correctly while tracking), but the resulting data file processed for speed (ie. distance vs. time) might show a point as 25mph, then the next point 5sec later as 35mph, then 25mph, 35mph, etc. You get a very jagged sawtooth pattern. Is there any way to just log all the recorded points to the file instead of having to "resample" them to 5sec intervals? Thanks!

Hi there, have samsung omnia 2 version on my omnia 2 phone but now my maps on navimapper are now being blocked.
Will this new version fix this prob and also does it support samsung compass features as omnia 2 version did?

    Hi doksilver,
Yes, there will be a new Omnia 2 version soon.

will navi plan to have voice routing some time? if so when?

  51. Alen Siljak Says:

    Hi!

Would it be possible to add a tag for overlay map? The effect is to get a hybrid map, like Yahoo for example, where the layer with names is rendered on top of the satellite imagery layer.

Still, the main issue I have is how to unify the map data into one database per provider. :)

    Best regards

  52. Tippy Says:

    MATTIAS,
No, voice routing is not in the foreseeable future.

  53. Alen Siljak Says:

Let me share an idea about caching tiles. I really like options to download only visited tiles. So, a setting/option could be used to activate "caching" or download of tiles. In that mode every downloaded tile would be stored in a database. These tiles would replace any existing tile for the same position (x,y,z, provider). Replacing older tiles is critical if we want to update portions of the map.
Once the area is cached, going to offline mode would read the tiles that are inside a database. This is not necessarily a square area (the way it is when we download now) and it takes some work upfront but allows extreme usability for people using the software as it saves space (stores only needed tiles) and keeps all tiles from one provider in the same database. Standard sqlite tools can be used to defragment these, or whatever.
    Any thoughts?
    Cheers

  54. Terry Says:

ok after being stranded an extra 10 days in Jordan due to the volcano ash... I used the software constanly for a month with pre prepared tracks then in general route finding mode ad we headed to the desert dropping pois ay junctions. It worked faultlessly using a combination of openstreet and peloined maps. For driving we just would have been lost without it. It also got ud into trouble with the Jordanian army since we got too close to the Syria border thanks to Cicerone walks book and my translation to decimal gps point, correct but now off limits so a pick on a Toyota riding in the back on the floor with machine gun mounted guy was a trifle uncomfortable, back to car and escorted to army check point to get the ok yo release the Grand Brittanias. Now how many satnav programs can offer that...

Meanwhile the Syrians were jamming satnav close to the border elsewhere as we went blind routinely at specific locations. A google revealed their track record on jamming and dislike of satnav.

So a very usefull program for off the beaten track road use and hiking.

    Device used HD2.

  55. Zaid Says:

    Hello Markus

I used NaviComputer v0.93 during the last ten days on my HTC HD2 on a trip to Syria and Jordan. It has proven to be really useful. I did came up with a list of annoying little details that I will later submit you. Overall it worked fine and I also will register in the next days.

    Many thanks

Hi, I installed Navicomputer on my HTC HD2. It works excellent! Especially the feature to download and store maps.
It is not clear to me to how I can save my own track when I follow a downloaded track during my walk.
So, what I am looking for is a possibility to save a track in a downloaded track and to continue this same track after saving.
I hope you can help me.

  57. Timberwoof Says:

Is it possible to download large areas with all possible zoom levels? For example, my city fits the program window only at 9-16 zoom level, if I get it closer (18 level) - I cant select whole city. So I have to split city in 4 quarters etc, not very usable at all!

  58. Alen Siljak Says:

    @Timberwoof
Open the area that you want to have on the map. For example, open it in level 9 so that it covers the whole city. Select Download Map and then select only the level 18. That will give you a map of the whole city at level 18 (only). Seems pretty simple.

  59. Tippy Says:

    TIMBERWOOF,
It doesn't matter how many times you split up a map. NaviComputer will select the proper map seemlessly if all the tiles are stored in the same place for that map.
I often download the lower zooms into one folder and the higher zooms into another. I do it to speed up download time.
The levels are "restricted" at certain zooms so that the entire world can't be downloaded to zoom 18. It would tie up the map server and prevent others from using it.
    Simply huh!

i would like comments on what i think a non-intuitive behaviour.

i have the default level 3 map (pre-installed with the app).

using the PC software, i have zoomed in to level 10, selected a chunk of map sized roughly 1/3 of the screen, selected zoom level 12 (was offered 10..18) and downloaded the map (turned out to be ~390Kb in size).

put the created ".nmap" file into Storage Card\Program Files\NaviComputer\Maps.

    restarted the PPC application.

pressing the "zoom in" button. no effect. the view does not switch from the default 3 to my downloaded 12.

not even if i center the map to roughly where my downloaded chunk is.

    what gives?

in online mode, zooming works fine (although discovering how to turn the online mode on is also very non-intuitive).

Hello there now appears to be a problem with accessing the OpenStreet Piste maps, on both the mobile device and the PC version you get the text plastered on your maps "Please Update Your Software"

    Help...

These maps have the handy iso bars on them for one next trip in three weeks.

  62. Josh Says:

OK a bit of self help here [2 mins latter, it is Saturday morning so I can be slow], using HttpFox went into OpenPisteMap looked at the tile and compared with the one in the XML file, I needed a "tiles." piece of text ahead of the openpistemap.

    eg. HttpFox showed

    http://tiles.openpistemap.org/contours/14/8526/5818.png

so tiles was missing from my XML.

Thanks again for a great program :) .

  63. Tippy Says:

    Mickey...

Unless you have your exact position centered in the map screen, Navi will not zoom down below the default 3.
That is why it works when the GPS has established a position.
Without it, you are trying to find the head of a pin on a world map.
Sometimes you get it and sometimes not.

Also, if you had gone to our Tips and Tricks section, everything about using NavComputer correctly is located there. It becomes very intuitive if you learn how to use it first. :)

"Since version 0.90 it is also possible to select and show a specific map manually, so it is not necessary to place the location in the center of the map screen and manually zoom in/out. This function is accessible in the contextmenu of the Offline Maps list."
Where can i find this Option?
    - There are some OSM-based maps for hiking in the web (eg for Garmin), is it possible to use them?
    Best Regards

According to my previous Posting and after reading many other posts to the same question i have to concretize my Question about watching maps offline:
I want to study my downloaded maps without GPS, eg at home for plannig trips. I can`t find a solution for this, if so, it would meet all of my expectations perfectly...

    @ Dietmar:
    Have you seen this video:

In the video you can see how to go to the maps list and select one.

I would like to suggest one feature: in the dialog box for saving tracks as GPX file there are just the two options "Yes" or "No".

That means in practice, that the program in any case stops to track the actual route. Could you add a button "Cancel" in order to force the program, not to stop the actual tracking? Thanks a lot for the briliant programm!

    Greetings, Ricochet

    @developer:
Thanks, that´s it! But i have to confess that its pretty tricky to find out...
Do you have a suggestion to my other question too (importing topographic maps like amap for hiking etc)?
    Best Regards, Dietmar

    @Dietmar:

I too would like instructions on using topo maps as I frequently go backpacking where there is no cell signal. With 0.93 when I use Openpiste there are errors saying "please update your software", and it won't zoom in very far. Great software and thanks for your efforts!

I have a suggestion for NaviMapper.
Can you make its window resizeable?

    Salve!

    Andras

    Great little program - thanks!
However, and this may be an HD2 issue rather than a NaviComputer one, but here goes...

When I am recording a track I select the option to leave the phone running - all fine. But if I put the phone in my back the bumps and pushes it receives are interpreted as touch-screen inputs and execute all sorts of unwanted commands.

Any advice about how to stop this. (Suspending the phone also suspends NaviComputer's track recording function so that is not a fix)

    Regards
    Peter

  85. Bokkie Says:

    Re Peter:

Suspending the phone works for me on my HTC Touch P3450 (on Windows Mobile 6) which allows me to use the on/off button to suspend the phone while programs remain active in the Task Manager.

I've configured my phone blocking the touch screen and all buttons (except the on/off-button) when the phone is off/suspended (automatically after 5mins) to avoid the phone from switching on when the screen or any other button is accidentally touched.

When I start NaviComputer and press the on/off button, the phone suspends. When I press the on/off-button again, the phone switches on with NaviComputer still active. This way I have tracked several biking routes.

I've configured my phone to use the [X] apps button in the top-right corner to function as "minimize" when pressed once shortly and to use it for closing programs when holding it for a couple of secs.

However, my phone still switches on when I receive a phone call or when any other program has been configured to "pop-up" when it receives a certain activation interrupt. So, check the settings of (the programs of) your phone.

    Hope this helps.
